룻기 1장

 

엘리멜렉과 그 가족의 모압 이주

 

1 사사 시대에 그 땅에 기근이 든 일이 있었다 그 때에 유다 베들레헴 태생의 한 남자가, 모압 지방으로 가서 임시로 살려고, 아내와 두 아들을 데리고 길을 떠났다

( In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.)

 

2 그 남자의 이름은 엘리멜렉이고, 아내의 이름은 나오미이며, 두 아들의 이름은 말론과 기룐이다 그들은 유다 베들레헴 태생으로서, 에브랏 가문 사람인데, 모압 지방으로 건너가 거기에서 살았다

( The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.)

 

3 그러다가 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉이 죽고, 나오미와 두 아들만 남았다

( Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.)

 

4 두 아들은 다 모압 여자를 아내로 맞이하였는데, 한 여자의 이름은 룻이고, 또 한 여자의 이름은 오르바였다 그들은 거기서 십 년쯤 살았다

( They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years,)

 

5 그러다가 아들 말론과 기룐이 죽으니, 나오미는 남편에 이어 두 아들마저 잃고, 홀로 남았다

( both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.)

 

룻이 베들레헴으로 오다

 

6 모압 지방에서 사는 동안에, 나오미는 주님께서 백성을 돌보셔서 고향에 풍년이 들게 하셨다는 말을 듣고, 두 며느리와 함께 모압 지방을 떠날 채비를 차렸다

( When she heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, Naomi and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.)

 

7 나오미가 살던 곳을 떠날 때에, 두 며느리도 함께 떠났다 그들은 유다 땅으로 돌아가려고 길을 나섰다

( With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.)

 

8 길을 가다가, 나오미가 두 며느리에게 말하였다 "너희는 제각기 친정으로 돌아가거라 너희가, 죽은 너희의 남편들과 나를 한결같이 사랑하여 주었으니, 주님께서도 너희에게 그렇게 해주시기를 빈다

( Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's home. May the LORD show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me.)

 

9 너희가 각각 새 남편을 만나 행복한 가정을 이루도록, 주님께서 돌보아 주시기를 바란다" 나오미가 작별하려고 그들에게 입을 맞추니, 며느리들이 큰소리로 울면서

( May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband." Then she kissed them and they wept aloud)

 

10 말하였다 "아닙니다 우리도 어머님과 함께 어머님의 겨레에게로 돌아가겠습니다"

( and said to her, "We will go back with you to your people.")

 

11 그러나 나오미는 말렸다 "돌아가 다오, 내 딸들아 어찌하여 나와 함께 가려고 하느냐? 아직, 내 뱃속에 아들들이 들어 있어서, 그것들이 너희 남편이라도 될 수 있다는 말이냐?

( But Naomi said, "Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?)

 

12 돌아가 다오, 내 딸들아 제발 돌아가거라 재혼을 하기에는, 내가 너무 늙었다 설령, 나에게 어떤 희망이 있다거나, 오늘 밤 내가 남편을 맞아들여 아들들을 낳게 된다거나 하더라도,

( Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me--even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons--)

 

13 너희가, 그것들이 클 때까지 기다릴 셈이냐? 그 때까지 재혼도 하지 않고, 홀로들 지내겠다는 말이냐? 아서라, 내 딸들아 너희들 처지를 생각하니, 내 마음이 너무나 괴롭구나 주님께서 손으로 나를 치신 것이 분명하다"

( would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD'S hand has gone out against me!")

 

14 그들은 다시 한 번 큰소리로 울었다 마침내 오르바는 시어머니에게 입맞추면서 작별 인사를 드리고 떠났다 그러나 룻은 오히려 시어머니 곁에 더 달라붙었다

( At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.)

 

15 그러자 나오미가 다시 타일렀다 "보아라, 네 동서는 저의 겨레와 신에게로 돌아갔다 너도 네 동서의 뒤를 따라 돌아가거라"

( "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.")

 

16 그러자 룻이 대답하였다 "나더러, 어머님 곁을 떠나라거나, 어머님을 뒤따르지 말고 돌아가라고는 강요하지 마십시오 어머님이 가시는 곳에 나도 가고, 어머님이 머무르시는 곳에 나도 머무르겠습니다 어머님의 겨레가 내 겨레이고, 어머님의 하나님이 내 하나님입니다

( But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.)

 

17 어머님이 숨을 거두시는 곳에서 나도 죽고, 그 곳에 나도 묻히겠습니다 죽음이 어머님과 나를 떼어놓기 전에 내가 어머님을 떠난다면, 주님께서 나에게 벌을 내리시고 또 더 내리신다 하여도 달게 받겠습니다"

( Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.")

 

18 나오미는 룻이 자기와 함께 가기로 굳게 마음먹은 것을 보고, 더 이상 말리지 않았다

( When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.)

 

19 그 두 사람은 길을 떠나서, 베들레헴에 이르렀다 그들이 베들레헴에 이르니, 온 마을이 떠들썩하였다 아낙네들이 "이게 정말 나오미인가?" 하고 말하였다

( So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, "Can this be Naomi?")

 

20 나오미가 그들에게 대답하였다 "나를 나오미라고 부르지들 마십시오 전능하신 분께서 나를 몹시도 괴롭게 하셨으니, 이제는 나를 마라라고 부르십시오

( "Don't call me Naomi," she told them. "Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.)

 

21 나는 가득 찬 채로 이 곳을 떠났습니다 그러나 주님께서는 나를 텅 비어서 돌아오게 하셨습니다 주님께서 나를 치시고, 전능하신 분께서 나를 불행하게 하셨는데, 이제 나를 나오미라고 부를 까닭이 어디에 있겠습니까?"

( I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.")

 

22 이렇게 하여 나오미는 모압 여인인 며느리 룻과 함께 모압 지방에서 돌아왔다 그들이 베들레헴에 이르렀을 때는 보리를 거두기 시작할 무렵이었다

( So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.)

룻기 2장

 

룻이 보아스를 만나다

 

1 나오미에게는 남편 쪽으로 친족이 한 사람 있었다 그는 엘리멜렉과 집안간으로서, 재력이 있는 사람이었다 그의 이름은 보아스이다

( Now Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, from the clan of Elimelech, a man of standing, whose name was Boaz.)

 

2 어느 날 모압 여인 룻이 나오미에게 말하였다 "밭에 나가 볼까 합니다 혹시 나에게 잘 대하여 주는 사람을 만나면, 그를 따라다니면서 떨어진 이삭을 주울까 합니다" 나오미가 룻에게 대답하였다 "그래, 나가 보아라"

( And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor." Naomi said to her, "Go ahead, my daughter.")

 

3 그리하여 룻은 밭으로 나가서, 곡식 거두는 일꾼들을 따라다니며 이삭을 주웠다 그가 간 곳은 우연히도, 엘리멜렉과 집안간인 보아스의 밭이었다

( So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.)

 

4 그 때에 마침 보아스가 베들레헴 성읍에서 왔다 그는 "주님께서 자네들과 함께 하시기를 비네" 하면서, 곡식을 거두고 있는 일꾼들을 격려하였다 그들도 보아스에게 "주님께서 주인 어른께 복을 베푸시기 바랍니다" 하고 인사하였다

( Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, "The LORD be with you!" "The LORD bless you!" they called back.)

 

5 보아스가 일꾼들을 감독하는 젊은이에게 물었다 "저 젊은 여인은 뉘 집 아낙인가?"

( Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, "Whose young woman is that?")

 

6 일꾼들을 감독하는 젊은이가 대답하였다 "저 젊은 여인은 나오미와 함께 모압 지방에서 돌아온 모압 사람입니다

( The foreman replied, "She is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi.)

 

7 일꾼들의 뒤를 따라다니면서, 곡식단 사이에서 떨어진 이삭을 줍도록 허락해 달라고 하더니, 아침부터 와서 지금까지 저렇게 서 있습니다 아까 여기 밭집에서 잠깐 쉬었을 뿐입니다"

( She said, 'Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.' She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.")

 

8 보아스가 룻에게 말하였다 "여보시오, 새댁, 내가 하는 말을 잘 들으시오 이삭을 주우려고 다른 밭으로 가지 마시오 여기를 떠나지 말고, 우리 밭에서 일하는 여자들을 바싹 따라다니도록 하시오

( So Boaz said to Ruth, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls.)

 

9 우리 일꾼들이 곡식을 거두는 밭에서 눈길을 돌리지 말고, 여자들의 뒤를 따라다니면서 이삭을 줍도록 하시오 젊은 남자 일꾼들에게는 댁을 건드리지 말라고 단단히 일러두겠소 목이 마르거든 주저하지 말고 물단지에 가서, 젊은 남자 일꾼들이 길어다가 둔 물을 마시도록 하시오"

( Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.")

 

10 그러자 룻은 엎드려 이마를 땅에 대고 절을 하면서, 보아스에게 말하였다 "저는 한낱 이방 여자일 뿐인데, 어찌하여 저같은 것을 이렇게까지 잘 보살피시고 생각하여 주십니까?"

( At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me--a foreigner?")

 

11 보아스가 룻에게 대답하였다 "남편을 잃은 뒤에 댁이 시어머니에게 어떻게 하였는지를, 자세히 들어서 다 알고 있소 댁은 친정 아버지와 어머니를 떠나고, 태어난 땅을 떠나서, 엊그제까지만 해도 알지 못하던 다른 백성에게로 오지 않았소?

( Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband--how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.)

 

12 댁이 한 일은 주님께서 갚아 주실 것이오 이제 댁이 주 이스라엘의 하나님의 날개 밑으로 보호를 받으러 왔으니, 그분께서 댁에게 넉넉히 갚아 주실 것이오"

( May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.")

 

13 룻이 대답하였다 "어른께서 이토록 잘 보살펴 주시니, 몸둘 바를 모르겠습니다 어른께서 거느리고 계신 여종들 축에도 끼지 못할 이 종을 이처럼 위로하여 주시니, 보잘것없는 이 몸이 큰 용기를 얻습니다"

( "May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord," she said. "You have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant--though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls.")

 

14 먹을 때가 되어서, 보아스가 그에게 말하였다 "이리로 오시오 음식을 듭시다 빵 조각을 초에 찍어서 드시오" 룻이 일꾼들 옆에 앉으니, 보아스는 그 여인에게 볶은 곡식을 내주었다 볶은 곡식은 룻이 배불리 먹고도 남았다

( At mealtime Boaz said to her, "Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar." When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.)

 

15 룻이 이삭을 주우러 가려고 일어서자, 보아스가 젊은 남자 일꾼들에게 일렀다 "저 여인이 이삭을 주울 때에는 곡식단 사이에서도 줍도록 하게 자네들은 저 여인을 괴롭히지 말게

( As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, "Even if she gathers among the sheaves, don't embarrass her.)

 

16 그를 나무라지 말고, 오히려 단에서 조금씩 이삭을 뽑아 흘려서, 그 여인이 줍도록 해주게"

( Rather, pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don't rebuke her.")

 

17 룻은 저녁때까지 밭에서 이삭을 주웠다 주운 이삭을 떠니, 보리가 한 에바쯤 되었다

( So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.)

 

18 룻은 그것을 가지고 성읍으로 돌아갔다 룻은 주워 온 곡식을 시어머니에게 내보였다 배불리 먹고 남은 볶은 곡식도 꺼내서 드렸다

( She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.)

 

19 시어머니가 그에게 물었다 "오늘 어디서 이삭을 주웠느냐? 어디서 일을 하였느냐? 너를 이처럼 생각하여 준 사람에게, 하나님이 복을 베푸시기를 바란다" 그러자 룻은 시어머니에게, 자기가 누구네 밭에서 일하였는지를 말하였다 "오늘 내가 가서 일한 밭의 주인 이름은 보아스라고 합니다"

( Her mother-in-law asked her, "Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!" Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. "The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz," she said.)

 

20 나오미가 며느리에게 말하였다 "그는 틀림없이 주님께 복받을 사람이다 그 사람은, 먼저 세상을 뜬 우리 식구들에게도 자비를 베풀더니, 살아 있는 우리에게도 한결같이 자비를 베푸는구나" 나오미가 그에게 말을 계속하였다 "그 사람은 우리와 가까운 사이다 그는 집안간으로서 우리를 맡아야 할 사람이다"

( "The LORD bless him!" Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. "He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead." She added, "That man is our close relative; he is one of our kinsman-redeemers.")

 

21 모압 여인 룻이 말하였다 "그뿐이 아닙니다 그가 데리고 있는 젊은 남자 일꾼들이 곡식 거두기를 다 끝낼 때까지, 그들을 바싹 따라다니라고 하였습니다"

( Then Ruth the Moabitess said, "He even said to me, 'Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.'")

 

22 나오미가 며느리 룻에게 일렀다 "얘야, 그가 데리고 있는 젊은 여자들과 함께 다니는 것이 좋겠구나 젊은 남자 일꾼들에게 시달림을 받다가 다른 밭으로 가지 않아도 되니 말이다"

( Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with his girls, because in someone else's field you might be harmed.")

 

23 그리하여 룻은, 보리 거두기뿐만 아니라 밀 거두기가 끝날 때까지도, 보아스 집안의 젊은 여자들을 바싹 따라다니면서 이삭을 주웠다 그러면서 룻은 시어머니를 모시고 살았다

( So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.)

룻기 3장

 

룻이 보아스와 가까워지다

 

1 시어머니 나오미가 룻에게 말하였다 "얘야, 네가 행복하게 살 만한 안락한 가정을, 내가 찾아보아야 하겠다

( One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, should I not try to find a home for you, where you will be well provided for?)

 

2 생각하여 보렴 우리의 친족 가운데에 보아스라는 사람이 있지 아니하냐? 네가 요즈음 그 집 여자들과 함께 일하고 있다 잘 들어 보아라 오늘 밤에 그가 타작 마당에서 보리를 까부를 것이다

( Is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been, a kinsman of ours? Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.)

 

3 너는 목욕을 하고, 향수를 바르고, 고운 옷으로 몸을 단장하고서, 타작 마당으로 내려가거라 그 사람이 먹고 마시기를 마칠 때까지, 너는 그가 눈치 채지 못하도록 조심하여야 한다

( Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.)

 

4 그가 잠자리에 들 때에, 너는 그가 눕는 자리를 잘 보아 두었다가, 다가가서 그의 발치를 들치고 누워라 그러면 그가 너의 할 일을 일러줄 것이다"

( When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.")

 

5 룻이 시어머니에게 대답하였다 "어머님께서 일러주신 대로 다 하겠습니다"

( "I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered.)

 

6 그는 타작 마당으로 내려가서, 시어머니가 시킨 대로 다 하였다

( So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.)

 

7 보아스는 실컷 먹고 마시고 나서, 흡족한 마음으로 낟가리 곁으로 가서 누웠다 룻이 살그머니 다가가서, 보아스의 발치를 들치고 누웠다

( When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down.)

 

8 한밤중이 되었을 때에, 보아스는 으시시 떨면서 돌아눕다가, 웬 여인이 자기 발치께에 누워 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀라면서

( In the middle of the night something startled the man, and he turned and discovered a woman lying at his feet.)

 

9 "누구요?" 하고 물었다 룻이 대답하였다 "어른의 종 룻입니다 어른의 품에 이 종을 안아 주십시오 어른이야말로 집안 어른으로서 저를 맡아야 할 분이십니다"

( "Who are you?" he asked. "I am your servant Ruth," she said. "Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer.")

 

10 보아스가 룻에게 말하였다 "이봐요, 룻, 그대는 주님께 복받을 여인이오 가난하든 부유하든 젊은 남자를 따라감직한데, 그렇게 하지 않으니, 지금 그대가 보여 준 갸륵한 마음씨는, 이제까지 보여 준 것보다 더욱더 값진 것이오

( "The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.)

 

11 이제부터는 걱정하지 마시오, 룻 그대가 바라는 것이라면 무엇이든지 다 들어주겠소 그대가 정숙한 여인이라는 것은 온 마을 사람들이 다 알고 있소

( And now, my daughter, don't be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character.)

 

12 내가 집안간으로서 그대를 맡아야 할 책임이 있다는 것은 틀림없소 하지만 그대를 맡아야 할 사람으로, 나보다 더 가까운 친족이 한 사람 있소

( Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.)

 

13 오늘 밤은 여기서 지내고, 날이 밝거든 봅시다 그가 집안간으로서 그대를 맡겠다면, 좋소 그렇게 하도록 합시다 그러나 그가 그렇게 하지 않겠다면, 그 때에는 내가 그대를 맡겠소 이것은 내가, 살아 계신 주님을 두고 맹세하는 것이오 아침까지 여기 누워 있으시오"

( Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to redeem, good; let him redeem. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives I will do it. Lie here until morning.")

 

14 룻은 새벽녘까지 그의 발치에 누워 있다가, 서로 얼굴을 알아보기 어려운 이른 새벽에 일어났다 이것은 보아스가, 그 여인이 타작 마당에 와서 있었다는 것을 남들이 알아서는 안 된다고 말하였기 때문이다

( So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognized; and he said, "Don't let it be known that a woman came to the threshing floor.")

 

15 보아스가 말하였다 "걸치고 있는 겉옷을 이리 가지고 와서, 펴서 꼭 잡으시오" 보아스는, 룻이 겉옷을 펴서 잡고 있는 동안, 보리를 여섯 번 되어서 그에게 이워 주고는 성읍으로 들어갔다

( He also said, "Bring me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out." When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and put it on her. Then he went back to town.)

 

16 룻이 시어머니에게 돌아오니, 시어머니가 물었다 "얘야, 어찌 되었느냐?" 룻은 그 남자가 자기에게 한 일을 시어머니에게 낱낱이 말하고,

( When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, "How did it go, my daughter?" Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her)

 

17 덧붙여서 말하였다 "여섯 번이나 되어서 준 이 보리는, 어머님께 빈 손으로 가서는 안 된다고 하면서, 바로 그가 손수 담아 준 것입니다"

( and added, "He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, 'Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.'")

 

18 그러자 시어머니가 일렀다 "얘야, 일이 어떻게 될지 확실해질 때까지, 너는 가만히 기다리고 있거라 아마 그 사람은 지금쯤 가만히 있지 않을 거다 이 일을 마무리 짓는 데, 오늘을 넘기지는 않을 것이다"

( Then Naomi said, "Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today.")

룻기 4장

 

룻이 보이스와 결혼하다

 

1 보아스가 성문 위 회관으로 올라가서 앉아 있는데, 그가 말하던, 집안간으로서의 책임을 져야 할 바로 그 사람이 마침 지나가고 있었다 보아스가 그에게 "여보시오, 이리로 좀 올라와서 앉으시오" 하고 말하였다 그러자 그가 올라와서 앉았다

( Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat there. When the kinsman-redeemer he had mentioned came along, Boaz said, "Come over here, my friend, and sit down." So he went over and sat down.)

 

2 보아스는 성읍 원로 열 사람을 청하여, 그 자리에 함께 앉도록 하였다 그 사람들이 모두 자리에 와서 앉자

( Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, "Sit here," and they did so.)

 

3 보아스가 집안간으로서 책임을 져야 할 사람에게 말하였다 "모압 지방에서 돌아온 나오미가 우리의 친족 엘리멜렉이 가지고 있는 밭을 팔려고 내놓았소

( Then he said to the kinsman-redeemer, "Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.)

 

4 나는 이 사실을 분명히 알려 드리오 여기 앉아 계시는 분들과 우리 마을 어른들께서 보시는 앞에서, 나는 당신이 그 밭을 사라고 말씀드리오 당신이 집안간으로서의 책임을 지겠다면, 그렇게 하시오 그러나 집안간으로서의 책임을 지지 않겠다면, 그렇게 하지 않겠다고 분명히 말하여 주시오 당신이 집안간으로서의 책임이 있는 첫째 사람이오 나는 그 다음이오" 그러자 그가 대답하였다 "내가 집안간으로서의 책임을 지겠소"

( I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line." "I will redeem it," he said.)

 

5 보아스가 다시 말하였다 "그렇다면, 나오미의 손에서 그 밭을 사는 날로, 고인의 아내인 모압 여인 룻도 아내로 맞아들여야 하오 그렇게 하여야만, 그가 물려받은 그 유산이 고인의 이름으로 남게 될 것이오"

( Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the land from Naomi and from Ruth the Moabitess, you acquire the dead man's widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.")

 

6 그러자 집안간으로서의 책임이 있는 그 사람이 말하였다 "그런 조건이라면 나는 집안간으로서의 책임을 질 수 없소 잘못하다가는 내 재산만 축나겠소 나는 그 책임을 질 수 없으니, 당신이 내가 져야 할 집안간으로서의 책임을 지시오"

( At this, the kinsman-redeemer said, "Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.")

 

7 옛적에 이스라엘에는, 유산매매나 물물교환과 같은 일을 법적으로 분명히 할 때에는, 한쪽 사람이 다른 한쪽 사람에게 자기의 신을 벗어서 주는 관습이 있었다 이스라엘에서는 이렇게 함으로써 일이 확정된다는 증거를 삼았다

( (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.))

 

8 집안간으로서의 책임이 있는 그 사람이 보아스에게 "당신이 사시오" 하면서, 자기의 신을 벗어 주었다

( So the kinsman-redeemer said to Boaz, "Buy it yourself." And he removed his sandal.)

 

9 그러자 보아스가 원로들과 온 마을 사람들에게 선언하였다 "여러분은 오늘 이 일의 증인입니다 나는 엘리멜렉이 가지고 있던 모든 것과, 기룐과 말론이 가지고 있던 모든 것을 나오미의 손에서 사겠습니다

( Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, "Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion and Mahlon.)

 

10 나는 말론의 아내인 모압 여인 룻도 아내로 맞아들여서, 그 유산이 고인의 이름으로 남아 있도록 하겠습니다 그렇게 하여, 고인의 이름이 그의 고향 마을에서도 끊어지지 않고, 친족들 사이에서도 끊어지지 않도록 하겠습니다 여러분은 오늘 이 일의 증인입니다"

( I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon's widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from the town records. Today you are witnesses!")

 

11 그러자 성문 위 회관에 모인 온 마을 사람들과 원로들이 대답하였다 "우리가 증인입니다 주님께서, 그대의 집안으로 들어가는 그 여인을, 이스라엘 집안을 일으킨 두 여인 곧 라헬과 레아처럼 되게 해주시기를 빕니다 에브랏 가문에서 그대가 번성하고, 또한 베들레헴에서 이름을 떨치기를 빕니다

( Then the elders and all those at the gate said, "We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.)

 

12 주님께서 그 젊은 부인을 통하여 그대에게 자손을 주셔서, 그대의 집안이 다말과 유다 사이에서 태어난 아들 베레스의 집안처럼 되게 하시기를 빕니다"

( Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.")

 

13 보아스는 룻을 아내로 맞이하였다 그 여인이 자기 아내가 되자, 그는 그 여인과 동침하였다 주님께서 그 여인을 보살피시니, 그가 임신하여 아들을 낳았다

( So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.)

 

14 그러자 이웃 여인들이 나오미에게 말하였다 "주님께 찬양을 드립니다 주님께서는 오늘 이 집에 자손을 주셔서, 대가 끊어지지 않게 하셨습니다 그의 이름이 이스라엘에서 늘 기리어지기를 바랍니다

( The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!)

 

15 시어머니를 사랑하는 며느리, 아들 일곱보다도 더 나은 며느리가 아기를 낳아 주었으니, 그 아기가 그대에게 생기를 되찾아 줄 것이며, 늘그막에 그대를 돌보아 줄 것입니다"

( He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.")

 

16 나오미가 그 아기를 받아 자기 품에 안고 어머니 노릇을 하였다

( Then Naomi took the child, laid him in her lap and cared for him.)

 

17 이웃 여인들이 그 아기에게 이름을 지어 주면서 "나오미가 아들을 보았다!" 하고 환호하였다 그들은 그 아기의 이름을 오벳이라고 하였다 그가 바로 이새의 아버지요, 다윗의 할아버지이다

( The women living there said, "Naomi has a son." And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.)

 

18 다음은 베레스의 계보이다 베레스는 헤스론을 낳고,

( This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,)

 

19 헤스론은 람을 낳고, 람은 암미나답을 낳고,

( Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab,)

 

20 암미나답은 나손을 낳고, 나손은 살몬을 낳고,

( Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,)

 

21 살몬은 보아스를 낳고, 보아스는 오벳을 낳고,

( Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed,)

 

22 오벳은 이새를 낳고, 이새는 다윗을 낳았다

( Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.)
