예레미야애가 1장

 

1:1 아, 슬프다 예전에는 사람들로 그렇게 붐비더니, 이제는 이 도성이 어찌 이리 적막한가! 예전에는 뭇 나라 가운데 으뜸이더니 이제는 과부의 신세가 되고, 예전에는 모든 나라 가운데 여왕이더니 이제는 종의 신세가 되었구나

( How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.)

 

1:2 이 도성이 여인처럼 밤새도록 서러워 통곡하니, 뺨에 눈물 마를 날 없고, 예전에 이 여인을 사랑하던 남자 가운데 그를 위로하여 주는 남자 하나도 없으니, 친구는 모두 그를 배반하여 원수가 되었는가!

( Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are upon her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is none to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies.)

 

1:3 유다가 고통과 고된 노역에 시달리더니, 이제는 사로잡혀 뭇 나라에 흩어져서 쉴 곳을 찾지 못하는데, 뒤쫓는 모든 자들이 막다른 골목에서 그를 덮쳐 잡는구나

( After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile. She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place. All who pursue her have overtaken her in the midst of her distress.)

 

1:4 시온으로 가는 길이 이렇게 쓸쓸하다니! 명절이 되었는데도 순례자가 없고, 시온 성으로 들어가는 모든 문에도 인적이 끊어지니, 제사장들은 탄식하고, 처녀들은 슬픔에 잠겼구나 시온이 이렇게 괴로움을 겪는구나

( The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed feasts. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, her maidens grieve, and she is in bitter anguish.)

 

1:5 대적들이 우두머리가 되고, 원수들이 번영한다 허물이 많다고, 주님께서 그에게 고통을 주셨다 아이들마저 원수들이 보는 앞에서 사로잡혀 끌려갔다

( Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The LORD has brought her grief because of her many sins. Her children have gone into exile, captive before the foe.)

 

1:6 도성 시온이 누리던 모든 영광이 사라지고, 지도자들은 뜯을 풀을 찾지 못한 사슴처럼 되어서, 뒤쫓는 자들에게 힘 한 번 못쓴 채 달아나고 말았구나

( All the splendor has departed from the Daughter of Zion. Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled before the pursuer.)

 

1:7 예루살렘이 고통과 고난을 겪는 날에, 지난 날의 그 모든 찬란함을 생각하는구나 백성이 대적의 손에 잡혀도 돕는 사람이 없고, 대적은 그가 망하는 것을 보며 좋아한다

( In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no one to help her. Her enemies looked at her and laughed at her destruction.)

 

1:8 예루살렘이 그렇게 죄를 짓더니, 마침내 조롱거리가 되었구나 그를 떠받들던 자가 모두 그 벌거벗은 모습을 보고서 그를 업신여기니, 이제 한숨지으며 얼굴을 들지 못한다

( Jerusalem has sinned greatly and so has become unclean. All who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns away.)

 

1:9 그의 더러움이 치마 속에 있으나, 자기의 앞날을 생각하지 않는다 그렇게 비참해져도 아무도 위로하는 이가 없다 "주님, 원수들이 우쭐댑니다 나의 이 고통을 살펴 주십시오

( Her filthiness clung to her skirts; she did not consider her future. Her fall was astounding; there was none to comfort her. "Look, O LORD, on my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed.")

 

1:10 대적들이 손을 뻗어 보물을 빼앗습니다 이방인이 주님의 공회에 들어오지 못하도록 주님께서 이미 금하셨으나, 그들이 성소에 침입하는 것을 예루살렘이 보았습니다

( The enemy laid hands on all her treasures; she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary--those you had forbidden to enter your assembly.)

 

1:11 예루살렘 온 백성이 탄식하며, 먹거리를 찾습니다 목숨을 이으려고, 패물을 주고서 먹거리를 바꿉니다 주님, 이 비천한 신세를 살펴 주십시오"

( All her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. "Look, O LORD, and consider, for I am despised.")

 

1:12 길 가는 모든 나그네들이여, 이 일이 그대들과는 관계가 없는가? 주님께서 분노하신 날에 내리신 이 슬픔, 내가 겪은 이러한 슬픔이, 어디에 또 있단 말인가!

( "Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering that was inflicted on me, that the LORD brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?)

 

1:13 주님께서 저 높은 곳에서 불을 보내셔서 내 뼈 속 깊이 들어가게 하시고, 내 발 앞에 덫을 놓아서 걸려 넘어지게 하셨으며, 나를 폐인으로 만드셔서 온종일 힘이 없게 하셨다

( "From on high he sent fire, sent it down into my bones. He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate, faint all the day long.)

 

1:14 주님께서 내가 지은 죄를 묶고 얽어서 멍에를 만드시고, 그것을 내 목에 얹어서 힘을 쓸 수 없게 하셨다 주님께서 나를 내가 당할 수 없는 사람의 손에 넘기셨다

( "My sins have been bound into a yoke; by his hands they were woven together. They have come upon my neck and the Lord has sapped my strength. He has handed me over to those I cannot withstand.)

 

1:15 주님께서 내 청년들을 무찌르시려고 내게서 용사들을 모두 몰아내시고, 나를 칠 군대를 일으키셨다 주님께서 처녀 유다를 술틀에 넣고 짓밟으셨다

( "The Lord has rejected all the warriors in my midst; he has summoned an army against me to crush my young men. In his winepress the Lord has trampled the Virgin Daughter of Judah.)

 

1:16 이 일로 내가 우니, 눈에서 눈물이 물처럼 흐른다 내게 생기를 되돌려 주고 위로하여 줄 이가 가까이에 없다 원수들이 우리를 이기니, 나의 아들딸들이 처량하게 되었다

( "This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears. No one is near to comfort me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed.")

 

1:17 시온이 손을 들어 빌었으나, 그를 위로하는 사람 아무도 없구나 주님께서 사방에 있는 적들을 시켜서 야곱을 치게 하셨으니, 사람들은 예루살렘을 더러운 성으로 여기는구나

( Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed for Jacob that his neighbors become his foes; Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.)

 

1:18 주님께서 하신 일은 옳으나, 나는 주님의 말씀을 거역하였다 모든 백성아, 들어라 이 고통을 보아라 처녀 총각들이 사로잡혀서 끌려갔다

( "The LORD is righteous, yet I rebelled against his command. Listen, all you peoples; look upon my suffering. My young men and maidens have gone into exile.)

 

1:19 내가 애인들을 불렀으나 그들은 나를 배신하였고, 제사장들과 장로들은 목숨을 이으려고 먹을 것을 찾다가, 성 안에서 기절하였다

( "I called to my allies but they betrayed me. My priests and my elders perished in the city while they searched for food to keep themselves alive.)

 

1:20 "주님, 나의 절망을 살펴 주십시오 애간장이 다 녹습니다 내가 주님을 얼마나 자주 거역하였던가를 생각하면, 심장이 터질 것 같이 아픕니다 거리에는 칼의 살육이 있고, 집안에는 사망이 있습니다

( "See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am in torment within, and in my heart I am disturbed, for I have been most rebellious. Outside, the sword bereaves; inside, there is only death.)

 

1:21 사람들은 나의 신음을 듣지만, 아무도 나를 위로하지 않습니다 내 모든 원수들이, 내가 재앙을 받는다는 소식을 듣고, 이것이 바로 주님께서 하신 일임을 알고서 즐거워합니다 주님께서 선포하신 그 날이 이르게 해주셔서, 그들이 나와 같은 꼴이 되게 해주십시오

( "People have heard my groaning, but there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my distress; they rejoice at what you have done. May you bring the day you have announced so they may become like me.)

 

1:22 그들의 모든 사악함이 주님 앞에 드러나게 해주시고, 그들을 엄하게 다스려 주십시오 주님께서 내 모든 죄를 다스리신 것처럼, 그들의 죄도 다스려 주십시오 끝없는 이 한숨소리, 심장이 다 멎을 듯 합니다"

( "Let all their wickedness come before you; deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my sins. My groans are many and my heart is faint.")

예레미야애가 2장

 

2:1 아, 슬프다 주님께서 어찌 이렇게 진노하셔서 도성 시온의 앞길을 캄캄하게 하셨는가? 어찌하여 이스라엘의 영광을 하늘에서 땅으로 던지셨는가? 진노하신 날에, 주님께서 성전조차도 기억하지 않으시다니!

( How the Lord has covered the Daughter of Zion with the cloud of his anger! He has hurled down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth; he has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.)

 

2:2 주님께서 노하셔서, 야곱의 모든 보금자리를 사정없이 불사르시고, 유다의 도성 성채들을 무너뜨려 땅에 엎으시고, 나라와 통치자들을 욕보이셨다

( Without pity the Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob; in his wrath he has torn down the strongholds of the Daughter of Judah. He has brought her kingdom and its princes down to the ground in dishonor.)

 

2:3 주님께서 타오르는 진노로 이스라엘의 힘을 모두 꺾으시더니, 원수 앞에서 이스라엘을 지키시는 오른손을 거두시고, 주위의 모든 것을 삼키는 불꽃처럼 야곱을 불사르셨다

( In fierce anger he has cut off every horn of Israel. He has withdrawn his right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.)

 

2:4 우리가 원수나 되는 것처럼 활을 당기시고, 대적이나 되는 것처럼 오른손을 들고 나서시더니, 보기에 건장한 사람을 다 죽이시고, 도성 시온의 장막에 불같은 노여움을 쏟으셨다

( Like an enemy he has strung his bow; his right hand is ready. Like a foe he has slain all who were pleasing to the eye; he has poured out his wrath like fire on the tent of the Daughter of Zion.)

 

2:5 주님께서 이스라엘의 원수라도 되신 것처럼, 그를 삼키시고, 모든 궁을 삼키시고 성채를 부수시어, 유다의 도성에 신음과 애통을 더하셨다

( The Lord is like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.)

 

2:6 주님께서는 성막을 들에 있는 원두막처럼 부수시고, 회막도 그렇게 허무셨다 주님께서 시온에서 명절과 안식일을 없애셨다 진노하셔서 왕과 제사장을 멸시하셨다

( He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden; he has destroyed his place of meeting. The LORD has made Zion forget her appointed feasts and her Sabbaths; in his fierce anger he has spurned both king and priest.)

 

2:7 주님께서 당신의 제단도 버리시고, 당신의 성소도 역겨워하셨다 궁전 성벽을 원수들의 손에 넘기시니, 그들이 주님의 성전에서 마치 잔칫날처럼 함성을 지른다

( The Lord has rejected his altar and abandoned his sanctuary. He has handed over to the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have raised a shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast.)

 

2:8 주님께서 도성 시온의 성벽을 헐기로 작정하시고, 다림줄을 대시고, 성벽이 무너질 때까지 손을 떼지 않으셨다 주님께서 망대와 성벽들을 통곡하게 하시며 한꺼번에 허무시니,

( The LORD determined to tear down the wall around the Daughter of Zion. He stretched out a measuring line and did not withhold his hand from destroying. He made ramparts and walls lament; together they wasted away.)

 

2:9 성문들이 땅바닥으로 무너져 내렸다 주님께서 빗장들을 꺾으셨다 왕과 지도자들은 뭇 민족 가운데로 흩어지고, 율법이 없어지고, 예언자들도 주님께 계시를 받지 못한다

( Her gates have sunk into the ground; their bars he has broken and destroyed. Her king and her princes are exiled among the nations, the law is no more, and her prophets no longer find visions from the LORD.)

 

2:10 도성 시온의 장로들은 땅에 주저앉아 할 말을 잃고, 머리 위에 흙먼지를 뒤집어쓰고, 허리에 굵은 베를 둘렀다 예루살렘의 처녀들은 땅에 머리를 떨군다

( The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have sprinkled dust on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground.)

 

2:11 내 백성의 도성이 망하였다 아이들과 젖먹이들이 성 안 길거리에서 기절하니, 나의 눈이 눈물로 상하고, 창자가 들끓으며, 간이 땅에 쏟아진다

( My eyes fail from weeping, I am in torment within, my heart is poured out on the ground because my people are destroyed, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city.)

 

2:12 아이들이 어머니의 품에서 숨져 가면서, 먹을 것 마실 것을 찾으며 달라고 조르다가, 성 안 길거리에서 부상당한 사람처럼 쓰러진다

( They say to their mothers, "Where is bread and wine?" as they faint like wounded men in the streets of the city, as their lives ebb away in their mothers' arms.)

 

2:13 도성 예루살렘아, 너를 무엇에 견주며, 너를 무엇에 맞대랴? 도성 시온아, 너를 무엇에 비겨서 위로하랴? 네 상처가 바다처럼 큰데, 누가 너를 낫게 할 수 있겠느냐?

( What can I say for you? With what can I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion? Your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can heal you?)

 

2:14 예언자들은 네게 보여 준다고 하면서 거짓되고 헛된 환상을 보고, 네 죄를 분명히 밝혀 주지 않아서 너를 사로잡혀 가게 하였으며, 거짓되고 허황된 예언만을 네게 하였다

( The visions of your prophets were false and worthless; they did not expose your sin to ward off your captivity. The oracles they gave you were false and misleading.)

 

2:15 지나가는 모든 나그네들이 너를 보고서 손뼉을 치며, 도성 예루살렘을 보고서 머리를 내저으며 빈정거리며, "이것이 바로 그들이 '더없이 아름다운 성이요 온 누리의 기쁨이라' 하던 그 성인가?" 하고 비웃는다

( All who pass your way clap their hands at you; they scoff and shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: "Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?")

 

2:16 네 모든 원수들이 이를 갈며, 너를 보고서 입을 열어 빈정거린다 "우리가 그를 삼켰다 이것이 바로 우리들이 기다리던 그 날이 아닌가! 우리가 이제 드디어 그것을 보았구나"

( All your enemies open their mouths wide against you; they scoff and gnash their teeth and say, "We have swallowed her up. This is the day we have waited for; we have lived to see it.")

 

2:17 주님께서는 뜻하신 것을 이루셨다 주님께서는 오래 전에 선포하신 심판의 말씀을 다 이루셨다 주님께서 너를 사정없이 부수시고, 네 원수가 너를 이기고 즐거워하게 하시며, 네 대적이 한껏 뽐내게 하셨다

( The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago. He has overthrown you without pity, he has let the enemy gloat over you, he has exalted the horn of your foes.)

 

2:18 도성 시온의 성벽아, 큰소리로 주님께 부르짖어라 밤낮으로 눈물을 강물처럼 흘려라 쉬지 말고 울부짖어라 네 눈에서 눈물이 그치게 하지 말아라

( The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord. O wall of the Daughter of Zion, let your tears flow like a river day and night; give yourself no relief, your eyes no rest.)

 

2:19 온 밤 내내 시간을 알릴 때마다 일어나 부르짖어라 물을 쏟아 놓듯, 주님 앞에 네 마음을 쏟아 놓아라 거리 어귀어귀에서, 굶주려 쓰러진 네 아이들을 살려 달라고, 그분에게 손을 들어 빌어라

( Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at the head of every street.)

 

2:20 "주님, 살펴 주십시오 주님께서 예전에 사람을 이렇게 다루신 적이 있으십니까? 어떤 여자가 사랑스럽게 기른 자식을 잡아먹는단 말입니까? 어찌 주님의 성전에서, 제사장과 예언자가 맞아 죽을 수 있습니까?

( "Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cared for? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?)

 

2:21 젊은이와 늙은이가 길바닥에 쓰러지고, 처녀와 총각이 칼에 맞아 넘어집니다 주님께서 분노하신 날에, 그들을 사정없이 베어 죽이셨습니다

( "Young and old lie together in the dust of the streets; my young men and maidens have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.)

 

2:22 주님께서는 내가 두려워하는 것을, 마치 명절에 사람을 초대하듯, 사방에서 불러들이셨습니다 그래서 주님께서 분노하신 날에, 피하거나 살아 남은 사람이 아무도 없습니다 내가 사랑으로 고이 기른 것들을 내 원수들이 모두 죽였습니다"

( "As you summon to a feast day, so you summoned against me terrors on every side. In the day of the LORD'S anger no one escaped or survived; those I cared for and reared, my enemy has destroyed.")

예레미야애가 3장

 

3:1 나는 하나님의 진노의 몽둥이에 얻어맞고, 고난당하는 자다

( I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.)

 

3:2 주님께서 나를 이끄시어, 빛도 없는 캄캄한 곳에서 헤매게 하시고,

( He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light;)

 

3:3 온종일 손을 들어서 치고 또 치시는구나

( indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long.)

 

3:4 주님께서 내 살갗을 약하게 하시며, 내 뼈를 꺾으시며,

( He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones.)

 

3:5 가난과 고생으로 나를 에우시며,

( He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.)

 

3:6 죽은 지 오래 된 사람처럼 흑암 속에서 살게 하신다

( He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead.)

 

3:7 내가 도망갈 수 없도록 담을 쌓아 가두시고, 무거운 족쇄를 채우시며,

( He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains.)

 

3:8 살려 달라고 소리를 높여 부르짖어도 내 기도를 듣지 않으시며,

( Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer.)

 

3:9 다듬은 돌로 담을 쌓아서 내 앞길을 가로막아, 길을 가는 나를 괴롭히신다

( He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked.)

 

3:10 주님께서는, 엎드려서 나를 노리는 곰과 같고, 몰래 숨어서 나를 노리는 사자와 같으시다

( Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding,)

 

3:11 길을 잘못 들게 하시며, 내 몸을 찢으시며, 나를 외롭게 하신다

( he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help.)

 

3:12 주님께서 나를 과녁으로 삼아서, 활을 당기신다

( He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows.)

 

3:13 주님께서 화살통에서 뽑은 화살로 내 심장을 뚫으시니,

( He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver.)

 

3:14 내 백성이 모두 나를 조롱하고, 온종일 놀려댄다

( I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long.)

 

3:15 쓸개즙으로 나를 배불리시고, 쓴 쑥으로 내 배를 채우신다

( He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall.)

 

3:16 돌로 내 이를 바수시고, 나의 얼굴을 땅에 비비신다

( He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust.)

 

3:17 내게서 평안을 빼앗으시니, 나는 행복을 잊고 말았다

( I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.)

 

3:18 나오느니 탄식뿐이다 이제 내게서는 찬란함도 사라지고, 주님께 두었던 마지막 희망마저 사라졌다

( So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.")

 

3:19 내가 겪은 그 고통, 쓴 쑥과 쓸개즙 같은 그 고난을 잊지 못한다

( I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.)

 

3:20 잠시도 잊을 수 없으므로, 울적한 마음을 가눌 길이 없다

( I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.)

 

3:21 그러나 마음 속으로 곰곰이 생각하며 오히려 희망을 가지는 것은,

( Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:)

 

3:22 주님의 한결같은 사랑이 다함이 없고 그 긍휼이 끝이 없기 때문이다

( Because of the LORD'S great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.)

 

3:23 "주님의 사랑과 긍휼이 아침마다 새롭고, 주님의 신실이 큽니다"

( They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.)

 

3:24 나는 늘 말하였다 "주님은 내가 가진 모든 것, 주님은 나의 희망!"

( I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.")

 

3:25 주님께서는, 주님을 기다리는 사람이나 주님을 찾는 사람에게 복을 주신다

( The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;)

 

3:26 주님께서 구원하여 주시기를 참고 기다리는 것이 좋다

( it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.)

 

3:27 젊은 시절에 이런 멍에를 짊어지는 것이 좋고,

( It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.)

 

3:28 짊어진 멍에가 무거울 때에는 잠자코 있는 것이 좋고,

( Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him.)

 

3:29 어쩌면 희망이 있을지도 모르니 겸손하게 사는 것이 좋다

( Let him bury his face in the dust--there may yet be hope.)

 

3:30 때리려는 사람에게 뺨을 대주고, 욕을 하거든 기꺼이 들어라

( Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.)

 

3:31 주님께서는 우리를 언제까지나 버려 두지는 않으신다

( For men are not cast off by the Lord forever.)

 

3:32 주님께서 우리를 근심하게 하셔도, 그 크신 사랑으로 우리를 불쌍히 여기신다

( Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.)

 

3:33 우리를 괴롭히거나 근심하게 하는 것은, 그분의 본심이 아니다

( For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.)

 

3:34 세상에서 옥에 갇힌 모든 사람이 발 아래 짓밟히는 일,

( To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land,)

 

3:35 가장 높으신 주님 앞에서 인권이 유린되는 일,

( to deny a man his rights before the Most High,)

 

3:36 재판에서 사람이 억울한 판결을 받는 일, 이러한 모든 일을 주님께서 못 보실 줄 아느냐?

( to deprive a man of justice--would not the Lord see such things?)

 

3:37 말씀으로 명령하시고 그것을 이루시는 분이 누구냐? 주님이 아니시더냐?

( Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?)

 

3:38 궂은 일도 좋은 일도, 가장 높으신 주님께서 말씀하셔서 일어나는 것이 아니냐?

( Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?)

 

3:39 어찌하여 살아 있는 사람이, 자기 죄값으로 치르는 벌을 불평하느냐?

( Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins?)

 

3:40 지나온 길을 돌이켜 살펴보고, 우리 모두 주님께로 돌아가자

( Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.)

 

3:41 하늘에 계신 하나님께 우리의 마음을 열고, 손을 들어서 기도하자

( Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say:)

 

3:42 "우리가 주님을 거슬러 죄를 지었고, 주님께서는 우리를 용서하지 않으셨습니다

( "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven.)

 

3:43 주님께서 몹시 노하셔서, 우리를 쫓으시고, 사정없이 죽이셨습니다

( "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity.)

 

3:44 주님께서 구름을 두르셔서, 우리의 기도가 주님께 이르지 못하게 하셨습니다

( You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through.)

 

3:45 주님께서 우리를 뭇 민족 가운데서 쓰레기와 오물 더미로 만드셨으므로,

( You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.)

 

3:46 우리의 모든 대적이 우리를 보고서 입을 열어 놀려댔습니다

( "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us.)

 

3:47 우리에게 남은 것이라고는 두려움과 함정과 파멸과 폐허뿐입니다

( We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction.")

 

3:48 내 백성의 도성이 파멸되니, 나의 눈에서 눈물이 냇물처럼 흐릅니다

( Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed.)

 

3:49 눈물이 걷잡을 수 없이 쉬지 않고 쏟아집니다

( My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief,)

 

3:50 주님께서 하늘에서 살피시고, 돌아보시기를 기다립니다

( until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.)

 

3:51 도성에 사는 모든 여자가 겪은 일을 보니, 내 마음은 슬픔을 달랠 길이 없습니다

( What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city.)

 

3:52 까닭없이 내 대적이 된 자들이 새를 사냥하듯 나를 쫓습니다

( Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird.)

 

3:53 그들이 나를 산 채로 구덩이에 처넣고, 돌로 막아서 못 나오게 하였습니다

( They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me;)

 

3:54 물이 내 머리 위로 넘쳤으므로, '나는 이제 죽었구나' 하고 생각하였습니다

( the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off.)

 

3:55 주님, 그 깊디 깊은 구덩이 밑바닥에서 주님의 이름을 불렀습니다

( I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit.)

 

3:56 살려 주십시오 못들은 체 하지 마시고, 건져 주십시오' 하고 울부짖을 때에, 주님께서 내 간구를 들어 주셨습니다

( You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.")

 

3:57 내가 주님께 부르짖을 때에, 주님께서 내게 가까이 오셔서 두려워하지 말라고 격려하셨습니다

( You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear.")

 

3:58 주님, 주님께서 내 원한을 풀어 주시고, 내 목숨을 건져 주셨습니다

( O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life.)

 

3:59 주님, 주님께서 내가 당한 억울한 일을 보셨으니, 내게 바른 판결을 내려 주십시오

( You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause!)

 

3:60 주님께서는 나를 치려는 그들의 적개심과 음모를 아십니다

( You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me.)

 

3:61 주님, 주님께서는, 그들이 나를 두고 하는 모든 야유와 음모를 들으셨습니다

( O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me--)

 

3:62 내 원수들이 온종일 나를 헐뜯고 모함합니다

( what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long.)

 

3:63 그들은 앉으나 서나, 늘 나를 비난합니다

( Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs.)

 

3:64 주님, 그들이 저지른 일을 그대로 갚아 주십시오

( Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done.)

 

3:65 그들의 마음을 돌같이 하시고, 저주를 내려 주십시오

( Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them!)

 

3:66 진노로 그들을 뒤쫓아, 주님의 하늘 아래에서 살 수 없게 하여 주십시오"

( Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.)

예레미야애가 4장

 

4:1 아, 슬프다 어찌하여 금이 빛을 잃고, 어찌하여 순금이 변하고, 성전 돌들이 거리 어귀마다 흩어졌는가?

( How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull! The sacred gems are scattered at the head of every street.)

 

4:2 순금만큼이나 고귀한 시온의 아들들이, 어찌하여 토기장이들이 빚은 질그릇 정도로나 여김을 받는가?

( How the precious sons of Zion, once worth their weight in gold, are now considered as pots of clay, the work of a potter's hands!)

 

4:3 들개들도 제 새끼에게 젖을 물려 빨리는데, 내 백성의 도성은 사막의 타조처럼 잔인하기만 하구나

( Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but my people have become heartless like ostriches in the desert.)

 

4:4 젖먹이들이 목말라서 혀가 입천장에 붙고, 어린 것들이 먹을 것을 달라고 하여도 한 술 떠주는 이가 없구나

( Because of thirst the infant's tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth; the children beg for bread, but no one gives it to them.)

 

4:5 지난 날 맛있는 음식을 즐기던 이들이 이제 길거리에서 처량하게 되고, 지난 날 색동 옷을 입고 자라던 이들이 이제 거름 더미에 뒹구는구나

( Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those nurtured in purple now lie on ash heaps.)

 

4:6 예전에는 저 소돔 성이 사람이 손을 대지 않아도 순식간에 무너지더니, 내 백성의 도성이 지은 죄가 소돔이 지은 죄보다 크구나

( The punishment of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment without a hand turned to help her.)

 

4:7 예전에는 귀하신 몸들이 눈보다 깨끗하며 우유보다 희고, 그 몸이 산호보다 붉고, 그 모습이 청옥과 같더니,

( Their princes were brighter than snow and whiter than milk, their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance like sapphires.)

 

4:8 이제 그들의 얼굴이 숯보다 더 검고, 살갗과 뼈가 맞붙어서 막대기처럼 말랐으니, 거리에서 그들을 알아보는 이가 없구나

( But now they are blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick.)

 

4:9 굶어 죽은 사람보다는 차라리, 칼에 죽은 사람이 낫겠다 다쳐서 죽은 사람이, 먹거리가 없어서 서서히 굶어 죽어가는 사람보다 더 낫겠다

( Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field.)

 

4:10 내 백성의 도성이 망할 때에, 자애로운 어머니들이 제 손으로 자식들을 삶아서 먹었다

( With their own hands compassionate women have cooked their own children, who became their food when my people were destroyed.)

 

4:11 주님께서 진노하셔서, 타오르는 분노를 퍼부으셨다 시온에 불을 지르고, 그 터를 사르셨다

( The LORD has given full vent to his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations.)

 

4:12 예루살렘 성문으로 대적과 원수가 쳐들어갈 것이라고, 세상의 어느 왕이, 세상의 어느 민족이 믿었는가!

( The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the world's people, that enemies and foes could enter the gates of Jerusalem.)

 

4:13 그러나 이런 일이 일어나고 말았으니, 이것은 예언자들이 죄를 짓고 제사장들이 악한 일을 하여서, 성 안에서 의로운 사람들이 살해되었기 때문이다

( But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.)

 

4:14 지도자들이 맹인들처럼 거리를 헤매지만, 피로 부정을 탄 몸이라서 아무도 그들의 옷자락을 만지지 않는다

( Now they grope through the streets like men who are blind. They are so defiled with blood that no one dares to touch their garments.)

 

4:15 사람들이 그들을 보고, "비켜라, 더럽다! 비켜라, 비켜! 물러서라!" 하고 소리친다 "그들은 가 버렸다 그들은 떠돌이가 되어야 한다 뭇 민족 가운데서, 다시는 안주할 곳을 찾지 못할 것이다" 하고 말한다

( "Go away! You are unclean!" men cry to them. "Away! Away! Don't touch us!" When they flee and wander about, people among the nations say, "They can stay here no longer.")

 

4:16 주님께서 진노하셔서, 그들을 흩으시고 돌보아 주지 않으신다 침략자들은 제사장들을 대우하지도 않고, 장로들을 대접하지도 않았다

( The LORD himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. The priests are shown no honor, the elders no favor.)

 

4:17 우리를 도와줄 사람을, 우리가 눈이 빠지도록 기다렸으나, 허사였다 우리를 구하여 주지도 못할 나라를, 우리는 헛되이 바라보고만 있었다

( Moreover, our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our towers we watched for a nation that could not save us.)

 

4:18 가는 곳마다 침략자들이 우리를 엿보니, 나다닐 수가 없었다 우리의 끝이 가까이 왔고, 우리의 날이 다하였고, 우리의 마지막이 이르렀다

( Men stalked us at every step, so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near, our days were numbered, for our end had come.)

 

4:19 우리를 쫓는 자들은 하늘의 독수리보다도 빨라, 산 속까지 우리를 쫓아오며, 사막에 숨어서 우리를 노린다

( Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they chased us over the mountains and lay in wait for us in the desert.)

 

4:20 우리의 힘, 곧 주님께서 기름 부어 세우신 이가 그들의 함정에 빠졌다 그는 바로, "뭇 민족 가운데서, 우리가 그의 보호를 받으며 살 것이다" 하고 우리가 말한 사람이 아니던가!

( The LORD'S anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.)

 

4:21 우스 땅에 사는 딸 에돔아, 기뻐하며 즐거워 할테면 하려무나 이제 네게도 잔이 내릴 것이니, 너도 별 수 없이 취하여 벌거벗을 것이다

( Rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.)

 

4:22 도성 시온아, 이제 네가 지은 죄의 형벌을 다 받았으니, 주님께서 다시는, 네가 사로잡혀 가지 않게 하실 것이다 에돔의 도성아, 주님께서 네 죄악을 벌하시며, 네 죄를 밝혀 내실 것이다

( O Daughter of Zion, your punishment will end; he will not prolong your exile. But, O Daughter of Edom, he will punish your sin and expose your wickedness.)

예레미야애가 5장

 

5:1 "주님, 우리가 겪은 일을 기억해 주십시오 우리가 받은 치욕을 살펴 주십시오

( Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.)

 

5:2 유산으로 받은 우리 땅이 남에게 넘어가고, 우리 집이 이방인들에게 넘어갔습니다

( Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners.)

 

5:3 우리는 아버지 없는 고아가 되고, 어머니는 홀어미가 되었습니다

( We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows.)

 

5:4 우리 물인데도 돈을 내야 마시고, 우리 나무인데도 값을 치러야 가져 옵니다

( We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price.)

 

5:5 우리의 목에 멍에가 메여 있어서, 지쳤으나 쉬지도 못합니다

( Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest.)

 

5:6 먹거리를 얻어서 배불리려고, 이집트와도 손을 잡고 앗시리아와도 손을 잡았습니다

( We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.)

 

5:7 조상들이 죄를 지었으나, 이제 그들은 가고 없고, 우리가 조상들의 죄를 짊어지고 있습니다

( Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.)

 

5:8 종들이 우리의 통치자가 되었습니다 그들 손에서 우리를 구해 줄 이가 없습니다

( Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands.)

 

5:9 먹거리를 얻으려고, 쫓는 자의 칼날에 목숨을 내겁니다

( We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert.)

 

5:10 굶기를 밥먹듯 하다가, 살갗이 아궁이처럼 까맣게 탔습니다

( Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger.)

 

5:11 시온에서는 여인들이 짓밟히고, 유다 성읍들에서는 처녀들이 짓밟힙니다

( Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah.)

 

5:12 지도자들은 매달려서 죽고, 장로들은 천대를 받습니다

( Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect.)

 

5:13 젊은이들은 맷돌을 돌리며, 아이들은 나뭇짐을 지고 비틀거립니다

( Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood.)

 

5:14 노인들은 마을 회관을 떠나고, 젊은이들은 노래를 부르지 않습니다

( The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.)

 

5:15 우리의 마음에서 즐거움이 사라지고, 춤이 통곡으로 바뀌었습니다

( Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.)

 

5:16 머리에서 면류관이 떨어졌으니, 슬프게도 이것은 우리가 죄를 지었기 때문입니다

( The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!)

 

5:17 바로 이것 때문에 우리의 가슴이 아프고, 바로 이런 것들 때문에 우리의 눈이 어두워집니다

( Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim)

 

5:18 시온 산이 거칠어져서, 여우들만 득실거립니다

( for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it.)

 

5:19 주 하나님, 영원히 다스려 주십시오 주님의 보좌는 세세토록 있습니다

( You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.)

 

5:20 어찌하여 주님께서는 우리를 전혀 생각하지 않으시며, 어찌하여 우리를 이렇게 오래 버려 두십니까?

( Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long?)

 

5:21 주님, 우리를 주님께로 돌이켜 주십시오 우리가 주님께로 돌아가겠습니다 우리의 날을 다시 새롭게 하셔서, 옛날과 같게 하여 주십시오

( Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old)

 

5:22 주님께서 우리를 아주 버리셨습니까? 우리에게서 진노를 풀지 않으시렵니까?"

( unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.)
